You need to see how it looks on a real person- and a real person who has recently had a new baby, too!

It can also be really handy to see how breastfeeding clothes are intended to work. One of my absolute favourite things about running my own business is searching out beautiful new breastfeeding clothing designers and bringing them to Bella Mama, so UK mamas can have the most gorgeous nursing designs to choose from when breastfeeding their babies...

I'm delighted to introduce another brand new designer to the range at bellamama, Love Milk is a new organic breastfeeding clothing brand set up in Sweden by mum of three, Helena Henning.

Love Milk offers a new type of nursing top, that works as an addition to a mum's existing wardrobe, which saves money as well as the environment and lets new mamas keep their own style.

Their design is unique and patented and allows breastfeeding discreetly in public with no fuss at all! The top has been designed with a deeper armhole, that is also fitted around the bust and stays there. To feed, you simply pull the armhole over the breast from the side, which means you don't show your boobs off to anyone. I gave birth to my first child in the beginning of May, 2006. Olaf was born through a planned c-section, a healthy big boy, almost 3800g at 38w2d. It was obvious for me that I would like to breastfeed him as long as possible although there was no positive experience of breastfeeding in my family. My mom never succeeded in breastfeeding – knowing what I know now, I am sure that it was because she did not persist in trying and had no one to tell her what to do…

My attitude was clear – I wanted to do all I can to breastfeed my child and I believed that nature would help me. I am a vet, hence my trust in instinct is even bigger than ”average” – after all – we are mammals.

Whilst still at the surgery room, when the doctors were putting me ”together” after c-section, our boy went straight up to his topless dad ;-) who was with me all the time because we knew that early ”skin to skin contact” is very important for the baby.

Our first try in breastfeeding was actually right after we left the surgery room. Olaf was put to my breast and tried to suckle a bit but fall asleep very fast. Although I was happy that he was safely resting in my arms, it turned out to be our biggest problem throughout the first days.

My baby simply wanted to sleep… It looked as if he hadn’t been through enough labour stress. Some big hands took him from my belly, he was put into a warm snugly towel and decided to sleep on as usual. The problem was – I could not get my milk just from looking at him…

Together with nurses, we tried to put him to my breasts and encourage to suckle and although he seemed to be good at it, he always stopped after a moment and ”sailed away”. I was getting more and more worried, especially that I knew that my baby was not getting ANY food. After 48hours I was ready to beg nurses to give him a bottle but then my midwife came and said that she had a much better idea. She brought a big electric breast pump and showed me how to use it. I had to sit up and pump every 2-3 hours for at least 20-30 minutes, day and night.

Oh, it wasn’t funny…

My hormones were playing games with me, I was feeling tired, low and ugly and only the sight of my sleeping boy gave me strenght not to throw it all away..

My husband was with me most of the time as we could share a private room – just us two and the baby, but I asked for no other visits as I needed quietness, rest and focus. At first I was able to collect just a couple of drops, but the amount of milk was getting bigger with every time I used the pump..

All nurses were very helpful – they took clothes off my baby to make him more awake and all the collected milk was given to my him with a small plastic cup, no bottles. In the very beginning Olaf was also getting some artificial babymilk but only a few times untill my breasts ”understood their job”.

And thanks to the ”baby gymnastic” and getting just a little bit of milk in his stomach every 3rd hour, Olaf started to show interest in eating and was actualy more awake – asking for food.

God I was happy!

We were able to leave the hospital 5 days after c-section as Olaf started sucking on his own and there was ”plenty in store”.

Luckily, although my breasts were filled up with incredible amount of milk, I had no tendency of getting breast inflammation, however I got another problem. As I was breastfeeding about 14 hours a day, my nipples got incredibly sore.

It was worst at the very moment he was starting to suckle and maybe half a minute after that. I had tears in my eyes and was biting my tongue not to scream. My mom who was visiting at that time, two weeks after Olaf was born, started gently to ask me whether it was worth the pain and struggle but I heard from my midwife that this feeling will end and so… it did.

About 6 weeks after giving birth I was able to enjoy breastfeeding.

And when I say ENJOY – I mean it!

It was an incredible summer – long walks in town, plenty of sun and warmth and MANY hours of breastfeeding – as Olaf was not only hungry but often just thirsty because of the high temperature. I was never worried and not even once considered giving him extra liquids because I knew my milk was adjusting to the conditions, and as Olaf was growing gladly and all the nappies were wet – I knew he had all he needed as long as my breasts were ”on hand”

Now I am breastfeeding my third child. She was born 28th April 2011 – a day before 3rd birthday of her bigger sister and 5 days before Olaf's 5th b-day.

All my children were born through a planned c-cection but there was absolutely no ”milk problem” with my girls.

And because breastfeeding is like riding a bike – you cannot forget it – it’s surely less stressful the second and every other time.

With the first baby it takes some time and patience to learn to breastfeed right, so no one can feel disturbed seeing you doing it in the middle of the shopping center, but once you get the techniqe and the RIGHT clothes which are huge help, hiding that post pregnancy tummy and opening just enough – it goes smooth.

I have never heard any bad comments from strangers, but sometimes people stop and smile friendly, especially hearing baby swallowing vigorously :-)

If I should have any advice for the newbaked moms struggling to breastfeed during the first days and weeks of their motherhood – trust your instincts, give it a good try, be persistant and think positive. And once you succeed and the milk is flowing, satisfying your baby’s needs – buy some good nursing bras and good quality tops and enjoy your time with the little one no matter where you are.

Because there are no words that can express the feeling… And the joy of seeing your child growing on YOUR milk is incredible.. So I better enjoy it whilst I still can as I will not have any more children…

New mums encouraged to try breastfeeding tops

Pregnant mums should consider investing in dual-purpose maternity and breastfeeding clothing as a UK survey shows strong support for breastfeeding.

A recent YouGov poll has discovered that almost three-quarters of the British public think that it is better for babies to be breast-fed.

72% in total feel that it is better for babies to be breastfed, over half (55%) thought it would be "much better", whilst 17% thought it would be slightly better.

The survey found that 17% thought that neither breastfeeding nor bottle feeding were significantly better than the other, with a tiny 1% thinking that it is healthier for babies to be bottle fed.

Hi,

Things have been so busy recently I've hardly had the chance to sit down and update bellamama's blog. A whole succession of bank holidays, Easter and a holiday in France has taken me away from the office (leaving you all in Nicola's capable hands!) and allowed me to have a relaxing break!

My brother-in-law is getting married this summer, and Miss O is going to be a bridesmaid which will be so much fun. I haven't planned my own outfit yet, but trying to plan what I am going to wear for their special day reminded me of the my sister's wedding 4 years ago and my own search for a gorgeous but easy-to-feed-in dress which inspired me to set up bellamama in the first place. I know the stress of searching and searching for something lovely to wear whilst breastfeeding!!

Sleep tips for sleep-deprived Breastfeeding Mamas

Sleep is definitely one of those things which is in short supply when you have a new baby. Sleep deprivation really takes its toll and can leave you feeling pretty rotten.

All the advice you are likely to get from friends and well-meaning relatives is "Sleep when the Baby Sleeps"...

Ha, if only it were that easy! So if sleep is a longed-for luxury for you, here are a couple of tips to help you get some much needed rest...

Don't check the clock!
When I had my first baby and he woke for a feed in the night, the first thing I would do is check the clock. I would feed him, check how long the feed had taken, then put him back to bed and worry about how few precious hours of sleep I would be able to snatch before he woke up for his next feed.

Gah!

That made me more stressed and made it even more difficult to fall asleep again after the feed.

Focussing *or obsessing in my case* about how little sleep I was getting just made me even more stressed and really highlighted to me how much time I was awake.

So, my advice is instead of focussing on how much time you have spent awake, do what you have to do, then go back to bed as quickly as possible!

I also found it really important to shift my expectations, and accept that as a new mum my sleep WOULD be more fragmented than it used to be, but found once I accepted that my sleep was going to broken for a while, I quickly become calmer and less stressed about it.

Take 20 minutes to yourself every day
As a new mum you will naturally have a lot of demands on your time, but the washing/cleaning/ironing/cooking/hoovering/phone calls will always be there!

You will just run yourself ragged trying to keep on top of everything, so it's important to just turn your back on the mess and the washing up and take some time for yourself. 20 minutes spent quietly by yourself relaxing whilst your baby naps, whether you are reading or just lying on the bed gives you a chance to clear your mind and come back to being a super-mummy slightly fresher than you were before!

If you have an elder child at home too, I found introducing some "Quiet Time" into their day really helped both of us. After lunch, Quiet Time was a chance for my kiddos to be quiet for a short time, playing, doing jigsaws or looking at books, giving us all a much needed time out before another busy afternoon!

Earplugs
I have a friend who swore by wearing her earplugs to bed every night. Apparently studies have shown that mothers of new babies wake approximately every few minutes to check on their baby, but don't really remember more than a handful of these times.

No wonder new mamas are exhausted.

So, even if it's only one night a week, go to bed early with your earplugs in and let dad bring the baby through to you for a breastfeed in the night. Undisturbed sleep = bliss.

Give Dad the first night-time feed
Once breastfeeding is established, you can express milk for the late night-time feed and go to bed early leaving your partner in charge of the late feed.

I used to pump just before going to bed at 8pm and slept through until the 2am feed!

*wooh*

Honestly, when you are really sleep-deprived that undisturbed stretch of deep sleep was just the thing I needed to get me through the next day!

Accept all offers of help
Even if you're a real "coper", it makes such a difference to swallow your pride and accept any and all offers of help. A couple of hours rest in the middle of the day whilst a friend takes baby out for a walk in the pram will make you feel so much better. Another (very lucky!) friend of mine decamped to her mum's house with her new baby and slept and rested whilst her mum looked after her grandchild and generally pampered her new-mama daughter. Awww.

Likewise as a new mum, all offers of helping with the cleaning, cooking a meal and babysitting should be grabbed with both hands.

Don't feel bad or guilty about this AT ALL! People love to feel useful, so they are making themselves feel good too. And they get to spend time with your gorgeous little one - who can resist a beautiful baby?

BEST Breastfeeding Tops for keeping warm during the cold weather!

Brrrr... January... cold, miserable and now the snow looks to be on its way back again. Yikes. I've been getting loads of requests for cosy, warm breastfeeding tops and have two brilliant suggestions for keeping your back, sides and tummy warm whilst being able to nurse your little one quickly and easily.

Firstly, Momzelle nursingwear. These tops have been so popular this season, I have restocked three times already. Designed specifically for nursing mothers, with extra room in the chest and tummy area, these tops are a perfect fit and have been flying off Bella Mama's shelves! Made from super-soft cotton (the black ones are also made from organic cotton) with full sleeves, and longer length to cover post-partum tummies comfortably.

The range comes in a variety of vibrant hues, including gorgeous pops of colour to lift your spirits in winter - warm purple, beautiful berry and funky turquoise.

There are so many wonderful things about this top. First of all, it's a great choice for 'going out' somewhere, as it can be worn dressy with a nice pant or skirt (or skinny jeans and heels!). The fabric is of such good quality, you can tell because it maintains its integrity after many washes. The neck isn't your typical turtleneck, it's much more trendy and loose which looks more modern. The length is great, and most importantly, it is very easy to breastfeed in this top while being discreet. I am very happy with this top.

My second recommendation for fabulous winter nursingwear are the stunning designs from Milker. Each time I've restocked Milker knits and dresses have been really eagerly awaited - their striped dress was the fastest selling item at Bella Mama this season!

Hoping you all had a fabulous New Year's, with plenty of food, fun, family and friends!

I wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has supported Bella Mama last year! The past year has been an amazing one for Bella Mama, our range of breastfeeding and maternity clothing has grown and we've brought some lovely new designers on board this year, as well as continuing to offer beautiful pieces from our ever-popular established designers. Some items were so popular the pre-ordered stock had sold out before the stock had even hit our shelves! Our range was broadened further by adding even more new mama essentials, with new luxury baby changing bags, beautiful nursing necklaces, breastfeeding-friendly nursing covers and ponchos in a variety of colours and designs, super stylish breastfeeding lingerie and yummy indulgent skincare.

We were all thrilled when our lovely Bella Mama Maia breastfeeding top was awarded a finalist in Practical Pregnancy's best feeding top category. Yippee!! Maia is our best-selling nursing top, and new mamas just love the design for it's simple elegance, flattering fit and easy nursing access. Maia is now available in black, lilac and midnight blue, and will be available in some enticing new colours in Spring.

In Summer Bella Mama moved to a brilliant new office (hooray!), which was quickly followed by the launch of our brand new and improved website, which has proven a hit with new mamas! Bella Mama loves to support new breastfeeding mothers, and our commitment during the past year has seen us pro-actively help to raise awareness of the health benefits of breastfeeding, donating nursing tops and breastfeeding dresses to breastfeeding charities and support groups throughout the UK. We are delighted to have been able to support many other causes helping to support nursing mothers - providing clothing for many breastfeeding fashion shows up and down the country, supplying breastfeeding clothing to charities supporting young breastfeeding mothers, donating nursing tops to breastfeeding support groups, providing raffle prizes to raise money for breastfeeding charities and raising awareness of breastfeeding at baby fairs and other events.

Maternity and Nursing dresses for Special Occasions

I've had lots and lots of requests for nursingwear for special occasions... lots of new mamas have weddings and parties to go to and find themselves in the same position I did shortly after I'd had both of my babies, and had a number of weddings to go to. My inability to find a gorgeous nursing dress was what led me to set up Bella Mama in the first place, so I can definitely sympathise with that panicky feeling of wanting to look fab at an event, and needing to be able to breastfeed easily whilst there. Nothing more stressful than either feeling like you're going to expose tummy or boobs whilst feeding your baby, or wondering if the only private place you're going to be able to feed is in the loos - ugh.

Enjoying Autumn and being busy!

Family life is moving at breakneck pace at the moment... half-term was super busy... no sooner are we back from our trip to Kent, D whizzed off on a training visit to Barcelona, the kiddos and I kept busy with Wacky Woods, Pumpkin Carving, shopping trips, lots of cupcake baking and then this weekend we were celebrating Aunty Ze's (shhhhhhhhhh!) 60th birthday with a family get-together!

We then spent a lovely few hours on Sunday out and about catching up with friends for an autumnal picnic (complete with my super seasonal ginger cupcakes with ginger fudge icing, yum!). Our local National Trust property, Tatton Park, had a pumpkin poetry trail and a brilliant display of pumpkins and squashes. Helping the kiddos hunting for pumpkins, Halloween inspired poems and strolling through the gardens was lovely. We enjoyed kicking through the piles of crispy fallen leaves, whilst my 8 y-o Finn delighted in covering me in leaf compost!

My friends' baby (my little god-son is now a proud big brother) arrived this weekend too. A beautiful baby girl, I am so happy for them and can't wait to meet her! Big squidges to them all.

Weekend was rounded off by making gingerbread cookies, trick or treating and a Sunday roast with my mum and dad.

So, all in all, a good weekend to round off a busy, busy week. I am hoping for a slightly calmer week this week!

Kiddos back to school/pre-school/nursery yesterday, and I am catching up with the arrival of more stock from Annee Matthew and Momzelle, and all the pre-ordered items of breastfeeding clothing which you've all been super-patiently waiting for.

Whew!

Bella Mama website moved servers this weekend, and we are now on bigger, better, faster servers which should make shopping for breastfeeding and maternity clothing with us better than ever. Yippee!

Breastfeeding for beginners

Breastfeeding can be daunting, especially for new mothers, so here at Bella Mama we have put together some useful tips which will help you out when your baby arrives:

1. Prepare. Breastfeeding is one of the most natural processes on the planet but it is not always an easy thing to do. By preparing for it well in advance you are more likely to succeed. Go to classes, read books and ask questions on the subject in order to mentally prepare for the coming events. Buy some breast shells and breastfeeding clothes such as nursing tops, before you give birth and take them to the hospital with you, ready to be used when baby arrives.

2. Don’t panic. It can take a few days after the birth for your milk production to really kick in. This means that the baby may not seem to be feeding too much in the first couple of days. This is nothing to worry about as long as your baby is actually feeding regularly and manages to latch onto the breast without too much difficulty.

3. Positioning. Your baby will not automatically know how to latch onto the breast. This is something you must help them to do until they get the hang of it. Always support your baby as best you can and find a position that works for you without causing pain. It may take a little while to find the perfect position but don't worry too much as you’ll quickly get the hang of it.

The top quality soft cotton fabric is super-cosy, whilst the cut of Momzelle's tops is very figure flattering. Happy Birthday Bella Mama!

Bella Mama, my gorgeous breastfeeding and maternitywear e-boutique, has been trading for THREE YEARS this week - hooray!!

In that time we have introduced lots and lots of new brands to breastfeeding mummies in the UK, and sold thousands of breastfeeding tops and nursing dresses which have all made a huge difference to the confidence of nursing mamas!! The business has grown dramatically since I started, and we have lots of very lovely loyal customers who have returned to Bella Mama for maternity and nursingwear clothing their second, and even third babies!

I want to say a huge THANK YOU for all the support we have been given - from our fabulous customers who have recommended us to their friends; the group of road-testing mummies who give feedback on our designs and collections; the fabulous suppliers who keep designing beautiful clothes for new mamas, and to the amazing network of talented people who have helped with Bella Mama's long, long list of requirements - Website, PR, Accounting, Design, Marketing, Book-keeping, Photography, Customer Service, Modelling, Order Packing and Printing. I've learned lots running this business, and learned a lot about myself - the bits of the job I adore and the bits which make me grind my teeth, put off and procrastinate about the task until I realise I MUST JUST DO IT!

This is the part of running Bella Mama that I enjoy the most... choosing the pretty clothing which will delight our customers and ensure that they feel positively fab when breastfeeding their beautiful babas. I will be stocking several new designers shortly, as well as the most amazing clothing from our existing suppliers. I also have another exciting project which is occupying my time, which I hope to be able to share with you all shortly...

I have a short holiday in Cornwall at the end of the month, then we will be into September and the new Autumn/Winter stock will be arriving at Bella Mama. Summer has flown, and I am still hoping that the sunny weather will return to the UK in the next couple of weeks. "Fantastic soft top"
This top is beautiful, it is so soft and I absolutely love the colour, I got the blue top, lovely fit and flattering even with a bit of tummy. I found feeding in this top so comfy, and I am a discreet person who hates anyone looking, I don't have a flat stomach any more and this top did a fantastic job of hiding it. I agree with some posters about it being a little expensive but all nursing tops are and this is well worth the cost, it even washes very well, I ironed it inside out with a muslin cloth on top of it and it looks just like it did new, wish I could afford to buy some more, fantastic top, must have for nursing mothers.....

"Lovely soft top"
The first thing I noticed about this top was how lovely and soft the material is - it's so comfortable to wear and is quite stretchy, so it fits really nicely. I have a size large top which fits my 14-16 top half fine. The sleeves are really flattering and the top is a nice length. I'm not massively keen on the neckline, but that's just my personal taste - it sits well and looks fine.

I have been breastfeeding my daughter for almost 10 months now, but had never tried a proper nursing top until now! The Maia feeding top has showed me what I've been missing, and I'm kicking myself for not trying feeding tops in the early days. The top layer pulls up to let you feed your baby while the bottom layer keeps your tummy and back covered. The openings are big enough to open your bra and feed your baby easily, even for my 34J pair!

I think the Maia top is expensive, but that can be said for all nursing tops really. I think if you're not confident about feeding in public (or don't fancy getting a chilly tummy in the winter) then this top is great and I would recommend it to friends.

Relaxation for pregnant and breastfeeding mamas

Whether you are a mama-to-be or a new mama there are sure to be many demands on your time (work, your family and friends, laundry, cooking, cleaning, the list goes on...) So it's really important to take a little time for yourself every day and TRY to relax!

I just love baths, and find wallowing in the tub a great way to relax before bedtime. Throw in some scented candles and a good book, and I'm away! To indulge my love of bathing, I am always on the lookout for beautifully scented products, enticing me with their promises of relaxation, lifting my mood, enhancing sleep or unknotting my tired muscles... I trained as an aromatherapist years ago (but didn't pursue this new career, as I started Bella Mama instead!) so I look for products with top quality aromatherapy oils and having sensitive skin, I avoid anything packed with artificial foaming agents, chemicals and other skin-stripping nasties.

Yesterday in a local shop I discovered (and treated myself to!!) the most amazing range of gorgeously indulgent treats - heavenly bath bubbles, uplifting shower gels and divine candles - in the luxury line Abahna. Their philosophy is simple, and centres on the ritual of bathing. Their products are made with delicious sounding ingredients like wild flower honey, aloe vera, shea and cocoa butter, with fragrances from pure essential oils and they never use synthetic perfumes, artificial colourings, mineral oils, parabens and other nasties and are against animal testing. Love, Love, Love it!!

Hubby was away last night, so after a busy day of BellaMama-ing, coping with the chaos of the building work we are having done and running around with the kiddos, I chose the Frankincense and Sweet Orange with its warm and comforting aroma, and it's promise to bring the emotions back into balance.

I lit the candle whilst the kiddos were on bedtime wind-down, and it really worked. They both loved the smell, and claimed they felt super relaxed too. haha, result! They both went to bed in super quick time, and left me to slip into my bubbly bath. It was just as divine, relaxing and calming as promised and I had a great night's sleep (for a change!). Oooh, it was the deep, restorative sleep that I usually get after a yoga class or relaxing massage, lovely! Will be checking out the rest of the range too...

Breastfeeding Can Save You Cash

Most women are now fully aware of the many health benefits for themselves and their children, if they choose to breastfeed, but breastfeeding offers another benefit, few women consider when deciding how to feed their baby – breastfeeding can save you money.

If you've ever looked at baby formula in the supermarket, you will know that it is very expensive indeed. If you were to work out the cost of baby formula over the course of a year, it could cost you between £750 and £1000, so if you were to breastfeed your baby instead, you would make a considerable saving on your grocery bill, and let's face it, when you're a new parent, you need all the cash you can get.

Of course, there are some costs involved with breastfeeding. You will need good nursing clothes, such as maternity bras and breastfeeding tops, but these can be purchased from us at Bella Mama. You will also need to buy breast pads and if you are returning to work, you will probably need a breast pump too, but when compared to the cost of buying baby formula on a regular basis, these costs are minimal. Nursing clothes and breast pumps can be kept and used again if you decide to have another child.

Breastfeeding can also save you money in terms of work related costs. Babies who are breastfed are much less likely to get sick, so if you breastfeed, the chances of you having to take sick days from work to care for your child are vastly reduced.

"Lovely top, easy to feed in, pretty too."
I was really excited to see my new top arrive, as I do feel quite uneasy feeding my new baby in public and even more so in front of my extended family, so to have a top that means I can feed without showing off my breasts was very important to how successful breastfeeding was for me.

Upon opening the bag the first thing I saw the lovely lilac colour, it was so feminine and pretty, just what I wanted! I tried it on right away, and it was a perfect fit, its a size small, I am an size 10-12. I love the detail on the sleeves which match the double layer for the top where you lift for feeding. Also around the neckline there is an adjustable pull cord which is fab for changing the fit of the top around the bust area, and as my breasts change size by the hour, really is a great addition to the top. The top has a double layer all around unlike most feeding tops which only have a feeding area at the front which means my back and tummy are not exposed at all.

So for the first use I fed in front of my family which includes my 3 boys aged 13, 9 & 6 years and it was easy to gain access to my bra and breasts, and to latch baby on, my boys came to give the baby a cuddle and didn't even notice I was feeding! Fantastic.

So I decided it was time to venture out to town, my top looked smart, feminine and was so soft to wear and I looked great!! I was happy and confident :) I managed to feed my baby in town without a feeding cover and it was easy discrete and I am totally pleased with the top. I would recommend to every breastfeeding mum. The top is soft for you and baby, easy to wash and wear, smart and practical and great value for money. The only thing I noticed after wearing it a few times is that a few stitches have come loose on the hem, I think the machine has missed a few hooks or something, but I am sure that is a one off.

"super soft!!!!"
The first thing i noticed when i received the Maia feeding top was the softness of the product and had to try it on straightaway. I selected a medium size, as with breastfeeding size goes up and down and this top was flattering, not too tight and i loved the fact that it was stretchy too.
Furthermore the colour of my top is black so it goes well with a skirt,trousers, jeans etc. Also the little ties at the top allows you to control the neckline which in my case i hate showing cleavage and a great bonus feature.
Basically you lift the top layer to find the opening which is great and its not fiddly or fussy, no buttons and zips to worry about and get feeding baby straightaway.
At 29.99 the top is a bit expensive, it would be great if you got savings of buying two. However, the fact that the delivery on bellamama is free in uk , makes it a little more inclined to buy.
I would definitely buy another one in a different colour as the fit was very good, and no worries about returning it. I love the top as it is fashionable and convenient , and would definitely not irritate baby skin and feeding time. thanks

Pretty New Breastfeeding Tops Just Arrived at Bella Mama

It's been a busy week at Bella Mama, and I can't believe that school is breaking up today and we have the whole of the summer holidays stretching ahead of us!

Since we had our holiday in France in May this year, I have no fabulous, sun-drenched summer holiday to look forward to, instead we will be in the UK enjoying a "Staycation"...

hahaha!

I have lots of activities with the kiddos planned - a whole variety of days out, picnics, camping, meeting friends, staying with family, birthday parties, science day camps, swimming, fencing lessons and lots of playing... let's just hope the weather perks up. At the moment the rain is doing its best to fill our very empty reservoirs (and hopefully end the North West's current hosepipe ban!) so I am very envious of lots of lovely BM mamas who are off on their hols shortly, and have been stocking up on flirty, floaty sundresses and sunny weather tops!

New stocks of our stylishly casual Melissa tops have just arrived, and are again proving popular with new nursing mamas. The delicate silver print on the reverse of the top makes this a lovely everyday nursing top. This is a great style to wear year round, and looks equally good with jeans, joggers or combats.

Gorgeous recipe for Breastfeeding Mamas!

Nursing mamas know that breastfeeding is hungry work! The extra calories required during breastfeeding are often consumed as small snacks throughout the day. Keeping the healthy mindset you had through pregnancy, snacks can help you have more energy, recover from the birth faster and help to support a healthy milk supply.

I just have to share this fabulous recipe from Annabel Karmel with you - makes perfect flapjacks every time, and packed full of nutritious ingredients. The additional dried fruit and seeds give a healthy boost, and a deliciously fruity twist. Pumpkin seeds are a powerhouse of nutrients, containing healthy omega 3 fats, which are crucial for brain development and a healthy heart. The oats in the flapjacks give slow-release energy, perfect for busy new mums!

These flapjacks are super popular with everyone in our house, for snacks and packed lunches. I made a batch last night, and am sitting in the office right now with my flapjack and cup of tea. Yummy! Need to build up my energy, as am off hiking up Shutlingsloe again this evening with Finn's Beaver pack...

Ingredients
80g butter
80g brown sugar
60g (2 tbsp) golden syrup
1/2 tsp salt
130g porridge oats
35g chopped dried apple
35g chopped dried apricots
25g dried cranberries
25g pumpkin seeds
2 tbsp sunflower seeds
25g desiccated coconut

Method
In a saucepan, melt together the butter, sugar, golden syrup and salt.
Mix all the dry ingredients together in a bowl and stir in the butter and syrup mixture.
Line and grease a 20cm square baking tin. Spoon the mixture into the tin and press down to level the surface using a potato masher.
Bake in an oven pre-heated to 180ºC for 18 to 20 minutes.
Store flapjacks in the fridge and cut into bars before serving.

I've just come back from a wonderful half term break in France, and not only was it lovely having a break but also seeing some sunshine! Thank you to Nicola who covered the office whilst I was away, and sent out all the orders, took phone calls, answered emails and sorted out my new stock so I didn't come back to a mountain of work.

Back to a rather soggy UK, but I hear that we are promised an "Ice Cream Summer" this year! Well, let's keep our fingers crossed. Finding gorgeous summery dresses which enable you to breastfeed your little one whilst keeping cool, and looking stylish is a cinch this year with the gorgeous designs from Milk Nursingwear.

This sundress has literally flown off my virtual shelves, and I managed to take the last of the stock from Milk who have also been experiencing huge demand for this style. And no wonder - fluttery, pretty print, super flattering and amazingly-easy to breastfeed in, this dress is just perfect for summery weather. The sundress also comes in a range of different colours (only black left in stock at the moment, the rest were snapped up before they arrived!) and new stock will be ordered from the US as soon as it is available. Bella Mama raises money for Committed 2 Breastfeeding

Well, this last week has certainly flown past - we are busier than ever supplying fabulous nursing clothing to new mamas across the UK and abroad, so much so that I haven't had chance to update everyone on my 3 peaks challenge!

On 1st May, myself and 16 other ladies set out to tackle the Yorkshire Three Peaks - one of the most famous fitness challenges in the country - which involves a 26-mile walk across the peaks of the three highest points in Yorkshire. The trek travels across Pen-y-ghent (691m), Whernside (728m), and Ingleborough (723m), with the total climb approximating 5,200 feet across varying routes and paths.

My friend Hayley joined me, and we eased ourselves gently into the weekend by booking into the Devonshire Spa hotel - we indulged ourselves with spa treatments, relaxing in the pool and a fabulous meal in the hotel restaurant. Fast forward 24 hours, and we were booking into a spartan B&B just down the road from the famous 3 peaks, and an early night before our 5.00am start!! (that's me, there, on the far left of the pic - hellllooooooooooo!!)

Fingers crossed for a better day than forecast (heavy rain!) the day dawned bright and clear, if a little cold. The walk took us up Pen-y-Ghent first, and we strode quickly up up up, through the low clouds into the bright morning sunshine, scrambling up the rocky summit to some stunning views across the Yorkshire fells. Woo-hoo, 1 down, 2 to go!!

Onwards down the other side of Pen-y-Ghent, and a long, long trek through the marshlands over towards the peak of Whernside. Had some lovely chats with the other girls taking part in the hike, and it was great to discover their backgrounds and the reasons that they were undertaking the walk.

We snacked as we walked: nuts, trail mix, dried fruit, chocolate, crackers, cheese, fruit, cereal bars and lots and lots of water and lucozade sport!! Over stiles, through gates and across streams, down paths, through stony ground and marshy ground, over bridges, down farmtracks, and main roads on and on we went...

Up, up, up Whernside next - up the stone slabs all the way to the top - yay! Then just after we reached the trig point at the summit, suddenly the heavens opened and an absolute deluge of rain and hail hit us. Water dripped off our waterproof jackets, and having not packed any 100% waterproof trousers (oops) I was suddenly very, very cold and with rather wet legs and socks.

Coming down Whernside, my sacro-iliac joint started to twinge and I was very wary of putting my back out again as I did in September. Nightmare. I picked my way carefully down the slippery stones and muddy path, hood and hands up against the hail, trying to avoid the trickling streams of water accompanying us down the slopes now, and made my way down to the meeting point at the bottom - I then decided that the pain in my hips meant I couldn't risk tackling Ingleborough and that I was very proud to have completed two peaks in one day. Hayley carried the Bella Mama hopes forwards, and went on to complete Ingleborough and the 3 peaks challenge!

This hike was easily the most challenging thing that I have done! I had some fabulous messages of support from my relatives, friends, Bella Mama's designers and customers alike - so thank you so much to everyone who has supported me in this. Hayley and I are planning a trip back this summer so I can do Ingleborough. I had a really fun day, I enjoyed the hike and the chance to see some of the loveliest parts of the UK whilst doing so.

Bella Mama's Bestselling Breastfeeding Clothing!

Whew! This week has been a busy one for the team at Bella Mama!

We have secured a fabulous new breastfeeding clothing designer, her beautiful tops and dresses are due to be picked up today from their warehouse and swiftly flown over the globe into Bella Mama's warehouse in the UK! This line is getting rave reviews already, and we think you'll be enchanted by this gorgeous new clothing - I hope to add the new tops to the site on Monday.

Our new labels are currently being printed, which means that our lovely packaging will be even nicer as soon as they arrive. We are also revamping the labels and swing tags on our clothing this season.

Bella Mama's SS10 line of breastfeeding clothing is in production, and the first tops will be with us at the end of March - I am so excited, this season's range is bigger, better and prettier than ever. Our road-testing mamas have delivered a big thumbs up, for comfort, style and practicality... I promise to post pictures as soon as possible! Our photoshoot will be taking place this month (as soon as samples arrive!) and promises to be very lovely indeed.

Raising money for Breastfeeding Support Groups

Training for the three peaks challenge in Yorkshire has been going very well this week! Raising money for breastfeeding support groups is really important to me, and I really need to ensure that I train well and complete the whole walk to raise as much money as possible! My friend (Orla's godmother) is getting married the day after the walk, so I really have to be in great shape so I can enjoy the day at her wedding, rather than creaking there in pain!)

On Sunday I walked up to White Nancy in Bollington. White Nancy is a 15-foot high stone landmark that stands proudly at the top of Kerridge Hill, overlooking the village of Bollington. It was built in around 1815 as a summerhouse for the Gaskell family, who lived at the nearby Ingersley Hall, possibly to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo. The walk up is lovely, made all the better by the great walkway and steps that are there. Still very testing on the legs!

My parents came with us, Finn ran up most of the way and hubby took Orla up in a backpack, which she was thrilled with! After the walk, feeling we'd clearly earned a lovely lunch, we went to check out a fabulous fish restaurant "The Place" in Bollington - for fish, chips and mushy peas all round. Lovely!

On Tuesday hubby dropped me in town to pick up some books, and I walked back the 2 miles to Sutton.Was a gorgeous day, and was lovely to spend time outdoors in the sunshine!

Thursday hubby and I went for a 5km walk around the lovely Macclesfield Forest. The weather was beautiful, and a massive change from the drizzly damp conditions my friend Hayley and I had tramped around in last Thursday. The views from the top were spectacular, and we could see all the way over Cheshire to the Welsh mountains (hello to Orla's godmother Claire!!). Naturally we had to stop for a bite to eat at the Leather Smithy pub afterwards!!! I am seriously beginning to doubt whether I can complete the 24 mile hike in May without a pub lunch en-route!!

Today I was all set to do my workout DVD after dropping the kiddos off at school/pre-school, when Hayley (my friend who is doing the walk with me in May) stopped by on the school run, and suggested a quick hike around the hills just around the village. Well, I quickly shoved my hiking boots on and we were off! We had a walk up into the hills above the village, and down into the neighbouring village when we were passed by a runner and her dog.

The next thing we knew, the lady runner had tripped over her dog and landed with a thump on the road. So we did our good Samaritan bit and went to help her. Not being medically inclined, we couldn't tell what she'd done but she had damaged her wrist, was clearly in pain and a little shocked.

Turned out she was on her first training run for the Manchester 10k this morning, and oops! it didn't quite work out as planned. Hayley and I walked her and her dog back up the hill to the farmhouse to ensure her doggy was safely home and her neighbour obligingly whisked her off to A&E! So we got a far longer training walk this morning than we intended!!!

Feel very good about training this week, and am planning more walks this weekend, and through next week. Am so lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world with fabulous walks right on my doorstep!!

So this evening, I am relaxing with pizza and a bottle of wine - hey, I've earned it!

Bella Mama's weekend in the Big Smoke...

I've had such a busy weekend travelling down to London to meet with new suppliers and then a visit to the Baby Show too.

Special mention must go to Keira from Mamascarf - 7 weeks from giving birth and she was on her stand at the Baby Show doing a fantastic job of introducing the amazing Mamascarf breastfeeding scarf to nursing mamas - I am in awe!! I travelled up and down to London commissioning books in my old job when I was pregnant with both Finn and Orla, but I absolutely could not have stood on a stand for three days and looked as fresh, enthusiastic and energetic as Keira did!!!

I had a great time - chatted with lots of interesting people, discovered several amazing new designers to stock at Bella Mama, I finally got to meet some of my suppliers face-to-face and really enjoyed getting out of the office.

Of course the fact that I got a v. cheap upgrade to Virgin First class on the train, got to go shopping in London, stayed in a deluxe hotel room (with a double upgrade due to hubby's Gold VIP card - woohoo I knew all that time he spends away from home had to pay off eventually!) complete with delicious buffet breakfast (mmm cinnamon danish), luxury toiletries, room service, wine, a pile of glossy magazines and two nights lovely sleep obviously added to the great weekend!

Ooooh, time just for meeeeeeeeeeeeee! No washing, tidying, cleaning, ironing, being mummy, refereeing arguments, bedtime and bathtime routine, homework, answering emails, texting, cooking, worrying about feeding family or what was in the fridge or what was for tea..... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, bliss. I really need to do this more often!!! The funny thing is that hubby is so supportive of my business, he is actively encouraging me to get out the door and spend more time meeting with suppliers, and travelling to USA/Canada/Singapore etc to meet with people -(he's great!) but it's me that's the wuss about travelling solo. He also doesn't shirk looking after the kiddos, like many dads I hear about!!

Ho-hum, back to reality today though. But have returned in relaxed, ready for action stylee.

Hubby is away in Spain all week and I have returned to a mountain of orders, so today has seen me in a whirlwind of packing and shipping our fabulous breastfeeding tops out to our lovely customers.

Spring is just around the corner - hooray. I know it doesn't feel like it with the current chilly cold weather, but it really is on its way... the snowdrops are already flowering, crocuses are peeping from the ground and daffodils have arrived. I've had daffodils in the house this week, and that little pop of colour on my sunny windowsill is just so cheerful.

The end of another busy week for Bella Mama. I've finally submitted my VAT return (woo-hoo! this has been hanging over my head for ages) and I am stocking two new fabulous suppliers - yay! So I have started my fitness regime for the Breast Foot Forward hike, I thought I would break myself in gently and this morning did the entire Cindy Crawford workout DVD. Amazingly I managed to get through it all, but discovered along the way I am hopelessly unco-ordinated when it comes to aerobic routines and much better suited to yoga as a workout!

Hubby is away to Barcelona next week, which means that getting out of the house and down to the gym is pretty much out.

Huff.

Looks like I'll be back to putting O into the Bugaboo and power-walking around the village.

My friend has just texted to say she is currently climbing up Teggs Nose and discovering how unfit she is. Suspect this is not true, she does lots of cycling and aerobics! Will definitely be walking out with her next week, and breaking in my new (hopefully amazingly comfortable!) hiking boots.

Yay!

The delivery of Milk Nursingwear arrived into stock this morning too. The keyhole dresses are fabulous and have been very well received by breastfeeding mamas in the UK. Black and Purple have been restocked, but are selling quickly.

There are also more of the brilliant halter neck dresses in classic black and stylish teal, perfect breastfeeding dresses for special occasions and super stylish too. The new smocked tops look beautiful, the "popcorn" type ruched/smocked detailing on the tops is very pretty indeed. The tops skim over new mum tum fantastically, and I think they're going to be really popular.

Breast Foot Forward, raising money for Breastfeeding groups!!

I have decided I am in need of a New Year challenge in order to improve my fitness, generally tone up and get more active!

When I heard that MedEquip4Kids were launching a new Charity, Committed2Breastfeeding, I wanted to help raise funds for this fantastic cause. Bella Mama are totally committed to supporting Breastfeeding mothers, and their decision to breastfeed. MedEquip4Kids has signed up to a global campaign initiated by UNICEF. The Baby Friendly Initiative is working to improve breastfeeding rates worldwide, and this campaign is supported by the World Health Organisation and the UK government, along with many of the Primary Care Trusts in the North West region. Its objective is to ensure that women are able to make an informed choice as to whether or not to breastfeed.

MedEquip4Kids has launched its first Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge, Breast Foot Forward, and it will be taking place on Saturday, May 1st. The Yorkshire Three Peaks is one of the most famous fitness challenges in the country - walk 24 miles conquering Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside. So, along with my friend Hayley, I will digging out my walking boots, strapping on my rucksack and tackling Breast Foot Forward in aid of the Committed2Breastfeeding project!!

This is easily the most challenging thing I have ever done, (I'm going to have to work hard to improve my fitness for the event!!) and it would be fantastic if you could help me to raise funds for this great cause.

Breastfeeding in Public – tips for new or expectant mums

So you are pregnant and you know that you want to breastfeed your baby. Congratulations! Maybe you have started breastfeeding but not yet ventured out in public. Breastfeeding in public can be a scary thought for any new mum and even not so new mums. These tips should help you on your way.

   1. Practise in front of a mirror. It might help you to know exactly what can be seen when you are breastfeeding your baby, you might be pleasantly surprised!

   2. Wear the right clothes. Ensure that you are wearing something that you are comfortable in and that can give you easy access for feeding. This might be a large top that you can easily lift or open. Layering with a cardigan can offer additional coverage. There are many different styles of breastfeeding clothing available, often with hidden openings across the chest allowing access without having to lift or remove any item of clothing. You might choose to double layer vests and lift one and pull down the other which will provide a similar effect.

   3. Take a friend along for moral support. If you are going to breastfeed in public for the first time, you should take someone supportive along with you whether this be your partner, friend, mum or even some other new mums.

   4. Go to a breastfeeding friendly place. You may want to seek out some breastfeeding friendly places in your local area and choose one for your first outing. Your Midwife or Health Visitor should be able to advise you on breastfeeding friendly places. Often child/baby friendly cafes are breastfeeding friendly.

   5. Find a seat out of the way. If you are still feeling nervous you may want to find a seat out of the way or in the corner until you increase your confidence.

   6. You could use a breastfeeding scarf or cover such as a Mamascarf. This not only provides privacy for public breastfeeding but allows you to see your baby throughout the feed, can’t be pulled off and also provides some additional support.

   7. Plan your route. If you know where you are going to be when it’s feeding time, you will be able to make sure that you are somewhere you are going to feel comfortable breastfeeding your baby.

   8. Have confidence in yourself and what you are doing. You are breastfeeding your baby, it is your right! It is the best food you can give your baby and it is also good for you too. Good luck and remember it gets easier with time. Happy Breastfeeding!

2009 has been the most fabulous year for Bella Mama, the business has continued to go from strength to strength; we have increased our incredible range of designers bringing more new breastfeeding clothing brands to the UK for the first time, we are delighted to have had many of our products featured in parenting magazines and websites during 2009, we have broadened our selection of nursing clothing from our fabulous existing designers and expanded our range of chic accessories and changing bags to bring breastfeeding mothers the freshest and most stylish nursingwear and essential new mama products available from one online store.

Bella Mama’s commitment to supporting breastfeeding mothers during the past year has seen us pro-actively help to raise awareness of the health benefits of breastfeeding, writing articles for magazines and online sites, and donating breastfeeding tops and nursing dresses to lots of breastfeeding charities throughout the UK. In addition to our ongoing support for the UK Association for Milk Banking (sales of our “I make Milk” T-shirt support this wonderful charity) we are delighted to have been able to support many other causes helping to support breastfeeding mothers. Our week is packed (as I'm sure yours is too!) with Christmas parties, Carol Services, Nativity plays, Junior Discos, Meals with friends and Christmas lunches. Miss O is a sheep in her nursery Nativity this afternoon, after having been a mouse at her pre-school Nativity yesterday. F's Christmas Performance is this evening, hopefully we'll all be able to squeeze into the church to see it. It's always standing room only unless you arrive an hour before the performance starts, oh well... Hubby has started his new job this week, 2 hours travelling each way to the office has come as a shock after a month on Garden Leave, and he has a quick trip to Barcelona tomorrow leaving Liverpool on the 7.30am flight....ugh. Fortunately he's back late Friday night, and I'm planning a quiet family weekend at home to relax!

Planning your perfect breastfeeding wardrobe – choosing breastfeeding clothes

Spending a little time planning your breastfeeding wardrobe will ensure that you don’t have a daily “nothing to wear” crisis! As a new mum there will be plenty of other demands on your time, so ensuring you have a few key pieces in your breastfeeding wardrobe will ease you through your post-partum period.

Begin with the basics
Choosing nursing vests in one or two staple colours will give you a great layering base. White, Black and Grey are classic choices and will allow you to mix and match your outfits flexibly. Look for vests with built-in bra support, these are indispensable in the first few weeks when your milk comes in and your boobs are swollen and tender. Longer length breastfeeding vests also layer well and give you a longer, leaner look whilst ensuring that your post-partum tummy is fully covered.

Casual loungewear
You will spend a lot of time in those early days breastfeeding your baby and generally recovering from the birth. Go easy on yourself and ensure that you have loose-fitting trousers and figure flattering tops to snuggle into during those magical first few weeks. Look for loungewear or nightwear with simple nursing access like easy drop cup access, or wrap access which is easy to move aside when you want to feed. Choose fabrics which are soft and cosy, and stretch easily so you are really comfy. They must also wash easily - a must when dealing with spit up or leaking milk!!

The beautiful exceptionally late "Indian Summer" we've been enjoying has finally come to a close... our Halloween celebrations took us on a trail around a local NT property with friends and we all had a fabulous time searching for bats around the spooky mill! The blustery blowy swirling winds of November have finally kicked in and are shaking the leaves from the trees in the garden. Boooooooooooooo! The rain is beating against my window, my snuggly Ugg boots are on (as ever!) and the logs I stacked into the log store at the weekend are being put to good use!! We are in the midst of redecorating our lounge (paint charts, masking tape, new brushes and dust sheets prevail) and I am trying very hard to persuade Himself that we need a wonderful new log basket that I have spotted in a magazine!!

Ooooh Halloween - our pumpkin lantern is ready, we are putting up the decorations and are prepared for a day of spooky goings on! Meeting with friends at a local NT property for a spine-tingling Halloween trail, creepy craft activities and back to ours for some frighteningly good food! F turned creative director whilst D scooped out the biggest pumpkin ever to create the gruesome lantern below - Miss O is "frighted" of the "punkin" and can't wait for it to be banished outside to our front step!!

F is so excited about this evening and has been planning his outfit for weeks. He's dressing up as the Grim Reaper "cos it's the scariest thing EVER"... We managed to track down a spooky Grim Reaper cloak last weekend, and F was thrilled when my parents arrived yesterday with a massive plastic scythe to complete the look! Miss O meanwhile just wants to dress up as a pink ballerina/fairy! There are plenty of pumpkins lighting up houses around the village, so looks like loads of people are up for being "trick or treated" - I'm sure we'll have a fun time this evening!

The photographs of our new Bella Mama Breastfeeding tops arrived with me today. I had to wait a little longer than usual for the shots as I wasn't happy with the way the cowl neck top was originally taken... (ever the perfectionist - hahahaha!) The top is gorgeous, and a really flattering style and I just didn't feel that the original picture did it justice. Anyway, several retakes later and I am happy with the result... so our new Demeter cowl necks in Damson are ready to order online! The colour is fabulous, and just great for this time of year. Plum shades are so versatile and are perfect for teaming with jeans, combats, joggers and casual trousers! It's just the right blend of dark enough to flatter the figure and the right shade to enhance that new mum glow. The cowl neck is brilliantly flattering, and the nursing access is really well hidden, you honestly cannot tell this is a nursing top. Just pull aside the cowl neckline to access the breastfeeding openings, whilst keeping your back, tummy and sides well hidden and cosy... This fabulous breastfeeding top is also available in our very lovely Ruby colour.

Our second new addition is our popular crossover breastfeeding top style, now available in a fabulous teal shade. This nursing top is simplicity itself, the crossover nursing panel just pulls to the side for ultra-simple nursing style. Choosing Breastfeeding Clothing - Nursing Openings

I am often asked what exactly IS a Nursing top, and how does it differ from a Maternity top? The answer is nursing tops offer you quick and easy access to the breast for nursing your little one, whilst keeping your chest, tummy, back and sides covered. Many designs work well both during pregnancy and afterwards for nursing, giving you even better value for money.

Many new mamas feel a little self-conscious nursing in public, and this is where well designed nursing tops can really help. With a little practice you will be able to simply and easily pull aside the nursing opening and latch your little one on, without anyone being any the wiser.

There are different styles of nursing access available at Bella Mama, and everyone has their own favourite style. All of the tops have a concealed nursing underlayer which has slits or cut-out openings for easy access to the breast. Some styles are brilliant for nursing in a sling, others provide maximum coverage whilst you are feeding. All are skilfully designed and the nursing openings wonderfully disguised so you really cannot tell they are nursing tops at all!

Pull Aside
This type of breastfeeding opening is accessed simply by pulling aside fabric at the top of the garment. These styles are simple to use and the nursing access can be gained single-handedly. This style of top has nursing openings which are accessed by pulling up the top at the empire line, just under the bust. This style of nursing access is really clever – the overlayer of the garment is pulled aside to access the nursing layer underneath at the front. The very popular Dote Noir nursing dresses feature this unique type of nursing access.

Pull Down
Nursing openings are in an underlayer which is accessed by pulling down the uppermost layer on the clothing – the Dote Slate breastfeeding top is a fabulous example where the funky styling of the top ensures that the breastfeeding function is disguised brilliantly.

Crossover

Two overlapping bands conceal the breastfeeding openings beneath. This style is fabulous for breastfeeding twins, as both sides can be accessed easily simultaneously. An example of this style is Annee Matthew’s Criss Cross breastfeeding top.

Double layer

This style of top has two layers which sit on top of one another. Pulling the uppermost layer upwards will give access to the nursing openings, whilst keeping your back, tummy and sides covered by the bottom nursing underlayer. The Bella Mama Maia breastfeeding top has two layers all the way around the top, whilst the Annee Matthew Kelly breastfeeding top has the double layer only at the front of the top. The double layer helps to keep you cosy in the colder months, by giving you an extra layer of fabric!

Modesty panel
Nursing tops with a modesty layer don’t have slits for nursing access, but a panel of fabric which sits flat against the chest and can be lifted at either side to give access to the breast. This gives a very smooth line to the breastfeeding top as there is no “cut out” area underneath. Mayreau’s best-selling and immensely popular Mia maternity and breastfeeding tops feature this type of breastfeeding access.

Double Layer Nursing Panel
Two layers of overlapping panels cover the breasts and one layer pulls down, whilst the other layer pulls up for nursing access. Peek-a-boo tops have this innovative style of nursing opening.

Between breastfeeding your little one and frequent nappy changes, it can be difficult to find the time to work out what to wear which will allow for quick and easy feeding, whilst flattering your new mama figure. The following tips from BellaMama.co.uk will help...

1.    Whilst your pre-pregnancy jeans and trousers may still be a little way off, resist the temptation to continue wearing your maternity trousers. Soft waisted, stretchy or drawstring trousers and skirts will be comfy and avoid giving you post-pregnancy muffin top.

2.    Patterned and darker coloured breastfeeding tops will hide any baby spit-up and leaking milk.

3.    Draw the eyes upwards with interesting necklines and/or pretty necklaces – directing attention away from new mum tum and towards your new mama glow

4.    Breastfeeding tops featuring Ruching, shirring and draped fabrics which softly disguise any post-natal pounds are a new mum’s best friend!

5.    Black in moderation! Whilst black can be super slimming, resist the temptation to wear it top to toe. Wearing too much black can be draining to the complexion and leave you looking in need of a good night’s sleep, so try midnight blue or chocolate brown nursing tops as a dark but flattering alternative.

6.    A pop of colour can also lift your mood, so try adding a brightly coloured breastfeeding top, chunky piece of jewellery, scarf or belt to your outfit.

When you become a mum, you quickly realise that with this gorgeous baby comes the need to carry around a whole load of STUFF! After naughty Mr Fox took our last chickens last Autumn, I have wanted to get more hens. The potential move to the States meant I have put this on the back-burner but I finally decided I've had enough of waiting for Visas and have got more chickens!

So, here are the girls! F is delighted to be in charge of the chickens, and between tea and homework and spellings we went out THREE TIMES with F's penguin torch last night at dusk to try to put them to bed. F tried to tempt them into their Omlet with lettuce from the veg patch, then spotted a huge slug and delightedly put the slug into their house and waited for them to come running (which they didn't!)

We checked them this morning, and they were settling in nicely. And even better than that, after school F's inspection revealed we had an egg today! F and O are thrilled, and have requested bacon and scrambled eggs for tea. We are so excited, we thought we'd have to wait 6 weeks for them to start laying! Hooray!

Busy, Busy, Busy

Manic day today, hubby is away in sunny North Carolina (sadly for him work, not holiday) leaving me in charge of the house, the kids, Bella Mama and everything in between.

This morning I had to dash to drop the kiddos off at nursery and before school club, drive a 35 mile round trip to drop the car off in the garage to be fixed, then whip back for 9.30am to meet up with a new networking group (Happy Mondays - more below) I've started attending, then back to pick F up from school for a dental appointment at 11.20. Then back home for an afternoon packing orders, posting, sorting stock, answering emails, updating the site and taking delivery of more of Bella Mama's brand new breastfeeding tops!

Busy day! I made it to everything almost on time, and got pretty much everything done, but my head is spinning from all the rushing round. The new networking group, Happy Mondays is a networking group for Mumpreneurs (and those thinking about taking the plunge) in East Cheshire. Set up by two local Mumpreneurs, the group aims to create an environment where talented but often isolated Mumpreneurs and small business women can make new contacts, generate ideas, learn from each other, talk about concerns, make friends, support each other and promote their businesses. Fabulous, and the guest speaker today had some wonderful ideas for promoting our businesses... can't wait to try them out.

My secret Amazon order (don't tell hubby, I'm not meant to be ordering books!) arrived today. I ordered a book called Behind with the Laundry and Living off Chocolate. Whilst the laundry bit is definitely true, I'm not quite at that choc stage (mmmmm) yet, but I'm hoping it has some good strategies to help cope with the general madness of being a busy woman!!! Will let you know how I get on. I also bought How to be an "Amazing Mum" When You Just Don't Have the Time! with lotsa strategies for the busy mum. One of the odder ones is to freeze marmite sandwiches for kids packed lunches - er, not too sure about that - but there are still tons of other useful hints and tips for busy mamas to fit it all in, whilst still finding time for your children, your partner and yourself!! Gotta be good...

Our book club choice for Oct The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society arrived in the same order, but will have to wait until I have finished with the new Kathy Reichs... better get that log-burning stove lit and snuggle up under my blanket with my book, oooh dark autumn nights are made for reading!

Walking round the village to pre-school this morning Miss O was fascinated with the fallen leaves, and the pretty colours the trees are starting to turn... Although this week has been pretty mild, there is a definite cooling in the weather. Summer really is at an end and Autumn is coming... Our wood burning stove has already seen its first fire of the season (hubby has been out chopping logs too), the blackberries are appearing on our brambles and my snuggly Ugg boots are back on constantly. Miss O has new boots and I am mighty jealous.

Check out the soft leather, the suede patches, the metallic stitching and the cosy furry tops... I want a pair in my size! I am on a mission to find some fab looking (but comfy) flat boots for myself now! I can barely wear heels anymore, they just hurt my back. I wondered about getting a pair of MBTs but I don't know anyone who's had any to see if they are worth the money. I know lots of people with FitFlops, who swear they are great for backache and posture, but they aren't too practical at this time of year!

The change in the season means new Bella Mama stock though and I have some gorgeous clothes arriving for A/W 09, including several new designers. I am constantly searching for the best breastfeeding clothing world-wide, and it's great to be the first to bring the freshest and prettiest designs to the UK.

I am rapidly running out of space in our stock room! My sister Nicola has been in this week to help with stock check (thank you!) and has organised the space fabulously. This week more new Bella Mama tops have arrived, including the very lovely new Maia breastfeeding top. They are so comfy and very flattering to new mama midriff! The soft jersey fabric skims beautifully, whilst the gentle ruching and tie detail around the neckline draws the eye upwards and away from new mum tum!

Providing a flash of colour for the new season, is the new Bella Mama cowl neck top which should be arriving towards the end of September. The jersey fabric drapes beautifully and the cowl neck is ultra elegant, whilst the longer length ensures it is great for taller mums or those wanting to hide their tummies. I'm off to pick more raspberries (this has been the best year for our crop!) for more raspberry jelly, I even managed to get enough to do raspberry gin (yay! but won't be ready until Christmas) and also the early blackberries which have started to appear on the bramble bushes in the ~~neglected~~ "wildlife" part of our garden. Haha, I'd love to say they are there by design, but the truth is all the tough weeds (brambles, horsetail, creeping buttercup) seem to thrive in these parts...

Nigella, I am Not

We have lived in our small village for three years, and between babies and holidays have never had chance to enter the village show. This year I was determined that I would enter for the first time! I love cooking and baking, and thought it would be great fun. My parents moved to our village last year, and my mum (seriously good cook) had decided that she would enter several of the classes, amongst them the jam and lemon drizzle cake ones. Well, that threw down the gauntlet, and I decided I just had to enter! In my fit of enthusiasm I also decided to enter F in several of the kids classes too...

I'd already made Raspberry jam from our harvest of raspberries, and had whipped up a jar of Lemon Curd in response to hubby's requests for a jar for his toast! I spent most of the preceding day in a whirlwind of preparation, baking lemon drizzle cake and fairy cakes for F to decorate, cooking scones, quiche, stirring large pans of chutney and overseeing F's chocolate krispie cakes, miniature garden and fruit sculpture.

Well, clearly a day of standing in front of the cooker acting like Nigella was not good for me, and I ended up throwing out my SI joint. Very, very painful, and something which I suffered with through both of my pregnancies. I could hardly stand up. Oh dear. So I hobbled round the show, very painfully and VERY slowly to see how I had done. Yay! I won second prize for my Cheshire Cheese Scones, and also second prize for my Caramelised Onion Quiche, but best of all, I had won FIRST for my Spiced Apple Chutney!! This First prize also won me a Cup, for the best Chutney in the show. I am sooooo proud, that my first time show has earned me a first time CUP! F did brilliantly too, taking First for his Chocolate Krispie cakes, Third prize for his (delicious) Smartie Cookies and several Highly Commended prizes. My parents and hubby's gran came over for Supper after the show, and we (well, they, I am veggie) ate Gammon with my prize-winning Spiced Apple Chutney to celebrate!!

So, a week of being unable to sit at the computer, chiropractic sessions, ice, freezing spray, diclofenac, very strong painkillers and a wonderful hubby who has not allowed me to lift a finger (doing everything around the house (including washing EVERYTHING in the laundry basket, sorting out all the paperwork and hoovering everywhere!) and sorting all of my Bella Mama orders for me) and my sister coming over to do BM stockcheck for me, has allowed me to rest up and fix my back so I am ready for another week of running the house and business whilst hubby goes over to the States.

My back is almost back to normal, and I now need lots of pilates and yoga classes to keep my back in working order so I can keep on top of day-to-day household business and BM orders!

Autumn Raspberries

One of the loveliest things about running Bella Mama and working from home is spending time with the kiddos. We've had a fab summer filled full of days with friends and family, castles, the beach, gardens, sports clubs, science camps, play centres, parks and relaxing at home! Sadly, the onset of September has brought us back to our more regular routine again. F has gone back to school today, into Juniors which he is feeling a little apprehensive about. He's been promised his favourite meal this evening, fish and chips, which has slightly eased his first-day-back nerves. I am also making Smartie cookies for him as an after school treat...

So Miss O and I have been home alone today for the first time in a while. This time of year brings our annual crop of Raspberries. The dark cloud of the damp summer weather at least has one Silver Lining: we've had a huge Raspberry crop here this year! Miss O and I have been out this morning picking the scarlet jewels from our canes. She has eaten sooo many whilst picking them... I managed to get almost a kilo of raspberries this time so I'm planning on making Raspberry and Lemon muffins (hubby's special request!), Raspberry jam and Raspberry vinegar. If there are enough left over, I shall be making some Raspberry Gin!

The colour so reminded me of the new Bella Mama Obi top, I have named it in honour of our harvest!
